Airline prices plummet
HIGH GEAR welcomes to its pages as a regular monthly feature the travel notes from all over by Rex Rode, the King of the Road. Rex's long years in the travel industry have prepared him well to cover the field for HIGH GEAR. His being Gay is added benefit-who else knows where and when to go for the
best?

The great airline fare war of 1981 is raging with great fury. A few short weeks ago, the round trip air fare between Cleveland and New York was $270.00. Today, you can travel on selected flights for as little as $39.00 one way. If the $39.00 seats are gone, others are available at only $59.00 one way. As you might expect, these super low fares have made New York City a very attractive destination. Almost every popular destination in the United States may be reached with similar very low air fares.
The great cities of the West Coast, San Diego, Los Angeles and San Francisco could cost almost $710.00 if you bought a coach ticket. Even night flights carried a price tag of $566.00. Today, there is a travel anywhere fare of only $358.00 which can be used for your visit to the Coast. You should remember that there is some fine print which is included with all of the special
low fares. However, don't be discouraged. Some advance planning and flexibility on your part will save a substantial part of your vacation costs.
Another new development that you should be aware of is the avallability of gay hotels and quest houses in many areas. New
Fulltime anti-gay nixer
The state of California has hired its first full-time official to protect gay state workers from
discrimination.
Glen H. Brooks, 36, will start work on June 15 with the State
Personnel Board, fielding complaints from state employees who believe they are victims of anti-gay prejudice
Sine 1978 Brooks has worked with child welfare programs. He also was the executive director of Planned Parenthood in Salt Lake City.
The Personnel Board interviewed eight applicants for the post, which stemmed from Gov-
ernor Brown's executive order banning discrimination against gay state employees.
It is estimated that 10 percent of the state's 118,000 full-time civil servants are homosexual. Brooks was selected because of his action in the gay community. He is considered to be "gay sensitive," meaning he understands the problems of gay male and lesbian individuals and has
acceptance among gays.
York City, for example, has three very small establishments that you will enjoy visiting. Their rates are very reasonable and the facilities are clean and comfortable. Gay accommodations are increasing in number and location. In many areas the owners have found that the response has been overwhelming and expansion plans are being considered. There are a number of travel to for help with your plans. I agents in Ohio that you can turn would be happy to refer you to one that is near you. Drop me a note c/o HIGH GEAR and the information will be on its way to you.
I have learned that another gay cruise has been planned for the winter of 1982. The dates of the trip are February 20 to 27, 1982.1 hope to have full details of the trip including price and itinerary for the next issue. This trip is being arranged by the same group agents that har-
tered a ship several years ago. At that time, the cruise was so successful that the New York Times ran a feature story about the trip On page 1 of its travel section. The story ran over a page in length. The proposed trip in February promises to be a wonderful opportunity to experience a Caribbean cruise with pleasant shipmates. This looks like the perfect way to have a gay time without playing it straight.
Finally, a word of caution. The attitude of the Toronto City administration toward the gay community has become very hostile. Reports that I received
indicate that police have made the city very uncomfortable. You may wish to reconsider any plans that you have for a visit to Toronto this summer in light of this information.
See you next month.
